The importance of a complete set of teeth
The grass pickup lifts grass from the ground and feeds it to the auger, which then moves it into the forage harvester. It is crucial that the correct tines are fitted across the entire working width. Missing tines immediately cause irregular feeding and leave grass in the field.
Bas’s adjustment tip: Make sure the header on Claas pickups is lowered sufficiently. Tine height is determined by the pickup wheels, not by the height of the header. If it is not lowered far enough, the auger holds the pickup up instead of allowing it to follow the ground correctly.
Why are different tines used on one pickup?
A Claas grass pickup contains two or three different tine types, consisting of the outer tines, centre tines and remaining tines. This arrangement has a specific purpose:

Outer tines, trailing: On all models, the outer eight tines, or ten tines on a five-bar pickup, are fitted with the tip trailing . This deliberately throws the grass forward rather than into the pickup at the corners. It prevents grass accumulating at the outer edges, which is harmful to the bearings and causes blockages.

Standard tine, robust: The normal pickup tine is wide, with a coil wider than its tips. This allows it to be manufactured from thicker, more robust wire, 6.3 mm instead of 5.6 mm. These tines last longer and simply pick up more effectively.

Centre tines, PU300 with steel covers: Older PU300 and PU300 HD models, frequently used with the Jaguar 800 series, have eight narrower tines made from thinner wire in the centre. Their coil is the same width as the tip to provide clearance for the central bearings of the tine arms. A wide tine would touch and damage these bearings.
